BIO

United by a common love of Old German Premium Lager, Drummer, Mudzo, Johnstone and Patrick W. Newby decided to embark on a non-traditional relationship path. Accompanied by equally weighty riffs and equipment, the quartet has forged an energetic take on punk and metal, a style that can only be described as ‘punkmetal.’

Emerging from State College, PA, UTM have been dotting their t’s and crossing their eyes since 1999. Drummer (21) grew up in a percussion commune, where he was educated on the precise art of hitting objects with sticks. Drawing inspiration from Vinnie Paul and John Stanier, Drummer combines speed and power in a double-kick laced display of beat keeping. Mudzo (22) is a former rock guitar god who tragically had to switch to bass due to severe head trauma that makes it impossible for him to play more than four strings at once. With a rumbling presence and clearly defined low-end inspired by Matt Freeman and Beaver Felton, Mudzo’s melodic bass lines are a solid anchor. Johnstone (21) began playing guitar only hours before joining UTM, his technique aided by years of Chinese relaxation ball use. With a heavy right hand and space-filling crunch, Johnstone’s propulsive rhythmic onslaught inspired by Page Hamilton and Stephen Carpenter brings the groove. After breaking out of a maximum-security senior citizens mental hospital, Patrick W. Newby (21) learned to play guitar during the 14½ years he spent hiding in the sewer. His style inspired in part by Kirk Hammett and Mark Knopfler, Patrick W. Newby’s chunky riffs and sharp solos add depth and breadth to UTM.

Sharing bills with Agnostic Front, Zao, Count the Stars, This Day Forward, River City High, 7-10 Split, Skycamefalling, Belvedere, The Most Secret Method, Six Going on Seven, No On 15, River City Rebels, Downway, The Keystone All-Stars, M.O.S. and countless others, UTM’s solid, rhythmically powerful tunes completed by alternately melodic and aggressive vocals have been well received by a variety of music fans. Now performing cuts from their latest album 'Inner Monster', UTM is perhaps best appreciated live, or while enjoying a frosty beverage.
